Kilimanjaro Short Treks and Day Hikes

Along the Marangu Route

Kilimanjaro Short Treks and Day Hikes

Climbing Kilimanjaro is an incredible journey of scenery and experience. But heading for the summit is not on every ones wish list.

Enter the Kilimanjaro Express Treks, short treks or day hikes. These hikies afford you the opportunity of trekking only part of the journey to either Mandara or Horombo Huts and getting a unique taste of trekking on this magnificent volcano. You can spend time hiking with family members who are heading to summit and then head down and do a short safari tour.
The Kili Express Treks are done along the Marangu route which is the most often used trail on the mountain, as accommodation is in huts and thus more affordable. As such, it is a busier route with many people on its well-worn paths, and if you are traveling alone, it is the only route on which you can easily join in with another group for company. It is also a more moderate ascent making it less difficult to climb than the others. Like with all other routes, porters carry all of your equipment and a cook prepares all your meals.

The Marangu route is also referred to as the "Coca Cola" route.

Your Questions Answered

Very definitely yes. Porters and guides are the life blood of any successful mountain hike. Through our partners in Tanzania we support various charity initiatives including the most important Kilimanjaro Porters Society. This society was registered under the name Mount Kilimanjaro Porters Society on 30th September 2005 as a non governmental organization with a certificate no 13296 under the organization art of the United Republic of Tanzania. The society exists as a shield for porters who are registered under it with the goal of improving the living and working condition of these porters.
This really depends on how many days you spend hiking on the mountain. Remember that each day you hike you are essentially doing the Marangu route except of course you are not going to summit. The one day trek and the two day trek are easier going as you do not really enter high altitude zones. The three and fur day treks are much harder as you are going to Horombo Huts and higher.
Generally speaking crowds are determined by the time of year. However as they follow the Marangu route which is the most popular route, they will be busy. They are also the only treks on Kilimanjaro that are shorter than summit treks.
There are two distinct trekking seasons during which is the best time to climb Kilimanjaro. They are January-March and June-October. January-March is generally colder than June-October. If you are only doing a one or two day trek then any time of year is fine but if you plan on going higher then you need to take more note of the seasons. You can get rain in the forest all year around.
Kilimanjaro is just three degrees south of the equator, so the lower slopes are generally hot and dry reaching 25°C during the day. This quickly dips with each ecological zone however, open heathlands, alpine desert and then, at the summit, categorically Arctic. Temperatures at Uhuru Peak are between -7 to -29°C.
As with all of our Kilimanjaro climbs, you will have a guide who will be with you each day. On the treks that are more than one day you will have a porter to carry your gear.
