Overview of the Highlands of Peru

 

 

Peru is a land of geographical complexity and striking beauty, with the marked contrast between the Andes Mountains, the arid Atacama Desert in the east, and the lush forests of the Amazon.

 

From the bustling town of Lima this tour heads up to Cuzco and the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, before heading up to Lkae Titicaca and ending off at the Nazca Lines of the coast.

 

 

Itinerary

 

Day 1 (Monday):  Lima

Arrival in Lima, reception and transfer to your hotel.

 

Day 2 (Tuesday):  Lima  (Breakfast & Lunch)

After breakfast, a tour briefing before your city tour of Lima; including a guided visit to the Cathedral, the Main Square and the San Francisco Catacombs. After lunch at Rosa Nautica, the foremost seafood restaurant in Lima, return to your hotel for a free afternoon. Overnight accommodation.

 

Day 3 (Wednesday):  Cuzco  (Breakfast & Dinner) 

Flight to Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Incas. A guided tour of Cuzco will include visits to the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, Tambomachay and the Qoricancha temple. Dinner and folkloric show in the evening. Overnight accommodation.

 

Day 4 (Thursday):  Sacred Valley –Ollantaytambo  (Breakfast & Lunch)

Excursion to Urubamba, the sacred valley of the Incas with a visit to the ancient Inca market of Pisac followed by a trip to the Pisac ruins above the town. Lunch before continuing the tour to Ollantaytambo, site of the last undefeated bastion of the Inca Empire. Overnight accommodation in Sacred Valley.

 

Day 5 (Friday):  Machu Picchu   (Breakfast)

Early train journey to Aguas Calientes for a full day's guided tour of Machu Picchu, the most spectacular ancient city in the world. Free time before overnight accommodation in Aguas Calientes.

 

Day 6 (Saturday):  Machu Picchu  (Breakfast)

Opportunity to revisit Machu Picchu at sunrise. Free time to enjoy this unforgettable site before returning to Cuzco aboard the afternoon train. Last night's accommodation in the Inca capital.

 

Day 7 (Sunday): Tambopata Jungle  (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Transfer to the airport for the flight to Puerto Maldonado. Reception and transfer to the Tambopata River port in Puerto Maldonado for the canoe trip to your jungle lodge. After arrival a short orientation and a complete briefing on the lodge before visiting a 35 metre scaffolding tower for a spectacular view of the river, the surrounding forest and an opportunity to observe birds from the canopy including parrots, toucans and macaws. Return to the lodge.

 

Day 8 (Monday):  Tambopata Jungle  (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Early wake at dawn for a visit to the Tres Chimbadas oxbow lake. Here we will take a long, easy canoe ride around the lake looking for giant river otters, turtles, hoatzin, and wading birds. The giant river otters that are seen in Tres Chimbadas belong to a resident family of nine. Return to the lodge for lunch before embarking on your afternoon outing to the community's ethno botanical center. We will hike the trails around the centre with one of the residents who will explain the everyday uses of forest resources in medicine, construction, food and fiber. Return to your lodge.

 

Day 9 (Tuesday): Tambopata Jungle (Breakfast)

After an early breakfast departure of our boat back to the city of Puerto Maldonado, directly to the airport, for our return flight back to Cuzco. Reception and transfer to your hotel.

 

Day 10 (Wednesday):  Cuzco - Puno   (Breakfast & Packed Lunch)

Departure by road to Puno visiting en route several Inca ruins and the remains of the great Viracocha temple, Raqchi. We shall also stop at the highest point along the way, La Raya before arriving to Puno and transferring to your hotel for overnight accommodation.

 

Day 11 (Thursday):  Lake Titicaca  (Breakfast & Lunch)

After breakfast, transfer to the port for the boat trip on Lake Titicaca to the reed islands of Uros. A visit to the Aymara island of Taquile before returning in the afternoon to Puno. Overnight accommodation.

 

Day 12 (Friday):  Lima   (Breakfast)

Return flight to Lima and transfer to your hotel. Last night's accommodation in Peru.

 

Day 13 (Saturday): Lima  (Breakfast)

Free day in Lima before your transfer to the airport for your return flight
