GIRAFFE POPULATIONS IN MASAI MARA DOWN 95%.
The Mara reserve sits at the top of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem,
which hosts the spectacular annual migration of up to 2 million
wildebeest and other animals. Bordering the park is an area known as the
Mara ranchlands, which is mainly home to the Masai ethnic group. Sadly,
however, The giraffe population of Kenya's Masai Mara reserve has
declined by up to 95% because of increased human settlement around the
unfenced park, according to a new study.
The authors of the study, which was funded by the WWF, say it presents
the most detailed evidence yet of the rapid decline of ungulate, or hoofed,
animals in the Mara, in south-western Kenya.
The main reason for the population decrease was the rapid expansion of
human settlements on the land next to the reserve. The area was
traditionally used by wild animals for seasonal grazing but is increasingly
being turned over to livestock and crop production.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED

1)
We want to do a safari in February 2010. Is it
better to go to Tanzania or Kenya? Ngorongoro
crater in Tanzania is a good place to start, as this is the time that
the Wildebeest have their calves before the start of the Migration season.
2)
When is the best time
to see cat predators in the
Serengeti?
Predators
can be seen through out the seasons but you are more likely to see them
from July to October as they follow the herds in the great migration.
3)
I am a photographer and want
to get good photographic opportunities to see the Mountain Gorilla? In
which country is this best achieved? The terrain in Rwanda is
easier for tracking the gorilla and less dense, which makes it better
for photography as there is more light in the forested areas. Gorilla in Rwanda
are
tracked from the Parc National des Volcans which currently has 7
groups and thus 56 permits available per day. The gorilla families
here are those of Group 13, Sabinyo (which also has the largest of
al the silver backs, Kahunga), Amahoro , Umubano, Susa, Kwitonda
which has crossed from Djomba in the DRC and Hirwa which has
recently formed from different habituated families. The
Susa group is
the largest and thus the best for photographic purposes.
