Peru prepares for annual Great River Amazon Raft Race

That time of year has come around once again, when the "Faint of Heart" are told to refrain from participating in the annual Great River Amazon Raft Race. This year's edition will once again bring together adventurers from around the globe, people who are not "faint of heart" and wish to test their physical, psychological and emotional endurance on one of the toughest rivers in the world.

The Amazon Rafting Club, based in Iquitos, Peru has invited rafters, canoeists, rowers, paddlers and adventurers from all over the world to compete in this year’s event. The 3 day race will start in the town of Nauta on Friday, 25th September 2009, and finish in the City of Iquitos on Sunday, 27th September 2009. The crews to compete will consist of four people that have built a raft themselves the day before the race. Each raft is to be constructed of lightweight balsawood logs that must last the 112 miles of the race.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED                                                                                        TOP OF PAGE
1) I am worried about the leeches in Cambodia. Will they be a problem? There are leeches in some rice  paddies and swamp areas but you will not encounter any on your tour, unless you choose to walk through a rice paddy yourself.

2) What sort of weather can I expect in Tanzania during the migration? The migration starts around May, June of each year as the wildebeest move toward the Mara until about late August/early September. During this period, there is little rain about and the days are hot. In July and August it is winter, with cooler evenings when a light weight pullover will be needed.

3) How much must I budget on tips in Chile? Tipping is a personal issue and depends on the service you receive from your guides and driver. For a guide, one should look at about $5-$10 a day and about $2 - $5 for a driver.
