Your Questions answered:-

1) With the attacks on the national park in the DRC, is it safe to visit the gorilla in Rwanda?

GROUPS TO JOIN - If you are looking for people to join you or want to join a group, let us know and we will list it here.

High Sight Adventure Expedition 2009

In March / June 2009 28 climbers, 14 vision impaired  participants (VIP) and 14 sighted will attempt to break the record for the number of vision impaired climbers to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. 14 of these climbers will come from Australia and New Zealand, and the other 14 from South Africa.

We are honoured to be involved and partly sponsor the High Sight Adventure Expedition to Kilimanjaro, a joint venture between South Africa and Australia, set up by Stephen Hilton-Barber from Brisbane.

The organisation is looking for people to pair with the VIP's for the climb as well as any donations and/or sponsorships for the group. The charities being represented are an Australian organisation for the blind and the Horizon Farm Trust / S A National Council for the Blind. If anyone is interested, please email us

Congolese Mountain Gorillas under threat

Attacks broke out in the Congo when rebels captured the Congolese military base at Rumangabo. Just south of Rumangabo is a national park known as Mikeno, which is home to about 72 mountain gorillas. Many of the park rangers have fled as a result of the attacks, leaving the endangered mountain gorilla unprotected. The rebels are now moving to Gomo.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED                                                                                        TOP OF PAGE
1) With the attack on the national park in the DRC, is it safe to visit the gorilla in Rwanda? Yes it is. The fighting is taking place in the Congo at Rumangabo, a military base. The rebels are aiming to take over the town of Gomo. The gorillas and tourists in Rwanda are safe and tourists are still entering the park with armed game wardens, as before. If the situation is unsafe, tourists will not be allowed to enter. Tour itinerary

2) On a recent trip to Kilimanjaro, a client suffered from High Altitude Retinopathy and mild High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) and asked the question, " will it  bear any effect on future acclimatization?" The answer is, not really. On your next trek you may be fine. Getting HACE or High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) is not a predictor that it will happen again next time. However, given that you did develop symptoms of HACE at 4800m I would strongly recommend that on your next altitude trek, that you take dexamethasone with you. Dexamethazone is a corticosteroid and should only be used to treat severe AMS (Altitude Mountain Sickness) and HACE. Some climbers take it as a precautionary measure in low doses. Tour itinerary

3) I would like to go on an overland tour across Tibet. Must I start in Kathmandu or can I start in Lhasa and where do I get my visa for Tibet? We normally start these tours in Kathmandu. Prior to the Olympics, visas took 2 days to obtain after which we departed on the flight to Lhasa. However, subsequent to the Olympics, processing for visa applications for Tibet was increased to 5 days. Lately, we have had some groups of clients being denied Visas for Tibet ( no reasons given by the authorities,) and other groups being granted Visa's without a problem. There seems to be no consistency at this time on who is and who is not granted a visa. The trouble is that when entering Tibet from Nepal, the visa can ONLY be issued in Kathmandu. As such, if you are able to start your tour in Lhasa, and obtain your visa prior to arrival through your embassy, it is better to do so. Once we have more clarity from the officials on the way forward for 2009, we will let everyone know. Tour itinerary
