Tibetan Harvest

Tibetan Girl in the Barley Fields

This stunning photo was taken during a tour across the Tibetan Plateau on a mountain bike during harvest season of 2007. Tsampa  is often called the national food of Tibet. Besides constituting a substantial  part of the Tibetan diet, its prominence also derives from the tradition of throwing pinches of tsampa in the air during many Buddhist rituals. At the end of Harvest season, which normally falls around August, comes Gtsang New Year in the Tibetan calendar, also called “Farmers’ New Year”. It is the celebration of the end of the harvest and usually starts on the 1st of November in the Tibetan calendar.  It marks the end of the whole year’s hard work, when crops have been harvested and farmers are sharing in the delights.
