Durban
- Portuguese Island : Days 1-3
We
set sail on the Starlight Melody Cruise Ship from Durban harbour, situated on the warm east coast of South Africa,
in the Province of Natal at 13h00, and head up the cost of the Indian
Ocean towards Portuguese Island, arriving at 10h00 the next morning.
Portuguese
Island in southern Mozambique is a tiny, uninhabited haven. The area is a
protected reserve and home to endless numbers of birds, exotic marine life
and wide, unspoiled beaches. The area is also popular with divers, along
with the water of nearby Inhaca Island
Maputo : Day 4
We
arrive to Maputo, situated at the mouth of the Tembe River. The bay is 95 km (50 mi)
long and 30 km (20 mi) wide. The Maputo River empties into the southern
end of the bay. Founded in the late 18th century, the city was named for
Lourenço Marques, the Portuguese trader who was the first European to
explore the area in 1544. The area is a melting pot of several cultures,
with a strong South African influence. Arab, East Indian, and Chinese
cultures are also found, making the local cuisine an elaborate
mix. Seafood is also very abundant.
Barra Lodge : Day 5
We
arrive to Barra Lodge, one of the top holiday
destinations on the mainland coast of Mozambique. Barra has secluded, unspoilt beaches, bordered by the
Inhambane estuary on one side and the sea on the other. There is plenty to
do in the area from exploring the mangrove swamps to diving in the crystal
blue warm ocean waters.
Bazaruto Island - Day 6
We arrive to Bazaruto
Island is the largest of the It is the largest in the Bazaruto
Archipelago, with towering dunes and large inland lakes frequented by many
water birds. The area is well known as one of the best spots for catching
marlin, kingfish and other large game fish.The island has a
hundred-year-old lighthouse on the northern point, which serves as a
signal to the many ships which pass by the channel up the east coast of
Africa.
Durban: Days 7-8
We then set sail for our return trip to Durban along the magnificent
east cost of the Indian Ocean.
